Your eyes are a snapshot of what is going on in the rest of your body. A thorough eye exam provides the best vision possible along with detecting diseases that not only affect your eyes but your overall health.
High blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and diabetes are just a few of the systemic diseases that can be detected from a comprehensive eye examination.
Comprehensive Eye Exam
Your eye examination will include; but is not limited to:
- Visual, medical and ocular history taken by the doctor allowing us to tailor the exam to your specific needs;
- Refraction to determine your eyeglass or contact lens prescription;
- Coordination testing for causes of eye strain, fatigue, and lazy eye;
- Microscopic examination of the anterior eye for infection, disease, or abnormalities;
- General health assessment of posterior retina and optic nerves;
- Dilation of pupils for a more extensive retinal exam; if required;
- Pressure testing for glaucoma;
The First Visit
At the time of your first visit you will be asked to fill out a medical and lifestyle information form. For your convenience, you can download the forms, fill them out and then fax them prior to your appointment. Fax number 631-728-0976. It is very important that you bring your eyeglasses, sunglasses, and/or contact lenses, a list of your medication with the proper dosages, a list of drug allergies, insurance cards, and any other information that you feel would be helpful.
Exam technology used
- Optomap Retinal Exam/Digital Scanning Laser - An integral part of every patient's annual comprehensive eye exam. Non-invasively generates an instantaneous, ultra-wide field digital scan of the retina; eliminates the inconvenience and discomfort of dilation; detects the early signs of eye disease, as well as systemic conditions such as hypertension and stroke; provides a permanent baseline record of the condition of your retina to compare from year to year; and allows the doctor to view the entire retina, most times without the need for dilating drops;
- Autorefractor - Objectively determines lens prescription needed;
- Corneal Topographer - Calculates topographical map of the external eye; an aid to finding corneal disease earlier; invaluable in fitting contact lenses;
- Abberometer - Using new wave-scan technology, finds high-order aberrations previously undetectable;
- Heidelberg Retinal Tomograph - Invaluable for diagnosing and following glaucoma patients. Instrument measure 300,000 data points on the surface of each optic nerve;
- Zeiss & Nikon Biomicroscopes - Provides microscopic analysis of the eye's internal and external structures;
- Computerized Lensometer & Refractor - Allows the patient to see the exact difference between how they see with their old glasses verses how they would see through their new prescription;
- Threshold Visual Field - Detects defects in one's field of vision;
- Tonometry - The measurement of the amount of pressure inside the eye; excessive pressure is a cause of glaucoma;
